I came home from the hardware store and my front deadbolt was different. When I knocked, my neighbor answered from inside my foyer like he belonged there.

I thought replacing one rotten beam in a shared party wall was just smart remodeling. Two days later, an inspector posted a red STOP WORK notice on my front door and my neighbor slid a “demand for reimbursement” letter under my mat.

I came home to bright red curb paint in front of my own house and a fresh “NO PARKING” stencil that hadn’t been there that morning. Two days later, I had a city citation on my windshield for “blocking a fire lane” that didn’t exist on any map I’d ever seen.

The first time I saw the boot prints in my mulch bed, I assumed it was kids cutting through. By the fourth Tuesday in a row, my side gate was unlatched and my security camera caught a contractor stepping into my yard like it was part of the job.

Our shared driveway pact worked for six winters, until the morning my neighbor filmed me with a tape measure in the snow. Two weeks later, I was opening a cease-and-desist letter that said I was "trespassing" on my own route to the street.

The city posted a pest abatement notice on my front door, and the photo they attached showed a compost pile I didn’t build. The worst part was the map: it crossed my property line by three feet.

I didn’t mind the drone deliveries until the app started labeling half my backyard as “Drop Zone B.” Then my neighbor told me I was “interfering with commerce” because I put a patio umbrella where his packages kept landing.

I was sitting at the closing table with my buyer’s cashier’s check on the way when my next-door neighbor walked in with a stapled packet and a grin. The title agent turned pale and said there was an old clause in my deed that could stop the sale cold—right there, in that conference room.

The inspector pointed at our shared brick stack and failed both houses on the spot. By dinner, my neighbor was texting me screenshots of a contractor estimate and demanding I pay half by Friday.

I fixed a lifted sidewalk panel in front of my house after a kid tripped and a neighbor started taking photos. Two weeks later, she demanded I reimburse her medical bills for a “fall” that happened on a different day—and the city sent me a liability questionnaire.
