Medical Malpractice

I told the nurse I was soaking a pad every twenty minutes and felt like I was going to pass out. She looked at my chart and said the bleeding was normal after delivery, and the doctor didn’t need to be called yet.

My gene panel came back “no actionable variants,” and every doctor treated it like a closed case. Four years later, a surgeon held up my pathology report and said the word nobody had prepared me for.

I watched the robot’s instrument tip shake by a millimeter and told myself it was nerves. Three patients later, the “minor tremor” lined up with the same internal injuries, and the maintenance log didn’t match what I’d seen with my own eyes.

I was the nurse who signed the temperature log before a holiday weekend, and I was the one who opened the fridge after. The numbers were wrong, the vials looked fine, and the clinic’s records said every shot was “caught up.”

The neurologist told me my CT proved I had a brain hemorrhage. I heard the word “hemorrhage” and watched the room shift from discussion to orders, and nobody asked to replay the dictation.

I went to the ER for dehydration and left with a ticking clock inside my kidney. Two days later my labs crashed, and the chart said my transplant meds were “intentionally discontinued.”

The night my mother died, the hospital’s phone interpreters weren’t answering. By the time anyone admitted the language-line had been cut, the wrong allergy was already stamped into her chart and the wrong drug was already in her vein.

I watched my wife seize on our living-room floor while her infusion pump kept clicking like nothing was wrong. At the ER, the nurse scanned the bag and said, "Verified," even as her heart monitor started throwing alarms.

I kept seeing the same note in the dialysis flow sheets: dark lines in the venous tubing, sudden back pain, then a hemoglobin drop that made no sense. The water reports were pristine, the machine alarms were quiet, and every log said “within range.”

My incision looked fine when they sent me home. Three days later my fever hit 103, and the ER CT showed fluid tracking along the surgical plane. The hospital called it “community-acquired” before my blood cultures even finalized.
